4 December 2011: Describe the purpose of your HR function in 60 words or less! Why does your company have an HR function? What does the HR function want to achieve? How will you do that? These are simple questions that all HR employees should be able to answer in exactly the same way. In an ideal world all managers and employees would be able to answer these questions too – it’s all about communication. A great exercise to do with the HR employees is to ask them in a group to describe the HR function’s purpose in 60 words – this becomes your HR function’s “elevator pitch” or ”boiler plate”.

3 December 2011: You can’t guess what managers want! You have to dare to ask managers about the support that they want in the future if you are going to be able to help them achieve their goals and targets. The problem is managers aren’t HR experts. They aren’t behavioural scientists, they aren’t compensation experts, they aren’t talent management gurus etc. Asking them “What can I do for you?” is not really just, as this isn’t a question that they can really answer from an HR perspective. You have to give them relevant alternatives to choose between if they are going to be able to give you meaningful feedback in your strategy work if it is going to lead to a great result.

2 December 2011: Forget everything you’ve done and focus on the future A great HR strategy has two main parts: What is the HR function going to deliver in the future? How will the HR function deliver processes and services in the future? When you attempt to identify what you think the HR function should deliver in the future it is important to forget what you have already done. Strategic thinking means that you think freely. This is difficult at the best of times – we are often (quite rightly) proud of the things that we have done and the things that we have achieved.
